AI usage limits in 2026: what each plan really allows
Last verified: — every figure checked against the official page linked next to it.
Most AI providers no longer publish a fixed number of messages. They measure usage by the computing power each request consumes, refill it every few hours, cap it weekly, and describe paid plans as multiples of the free one. This page collects what each provider officially says, word for word where it matters, with a link to the source.
Key findings
- None of the major chat apps publishes a fixed message count. Limits depend on the model, the length of the conversation and what you attach.
- Claude and Gemini refill on a 5-hour window up to a weekly cap; Grok refills weekly. OpenAI calls Free and Go text chats “unlimited subject to abuse guardrails” and says “limits apply” to Plus.
- Long conversations, file uploads, image or video generation, Deep Research and the strongest models all draw down the allowance faster. A clear prompt that works the first time is the cheapest way to stretch it.

How much text fits in one conversation
The context window is how much the AI can “see” at once: your messages, its answers and your files. When a chat outgrows it, the oldest parts drop out of view.
| Service | Plan | Context window | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Free | 27K tokens (about 12 pages of input) | |
| ChatGPT | Go / Plus | 54K tokens (Instant, ~40 pages); 256K with reasoning (~320 pages) | |
| ChatGPT | Pro | 128K tokens (Instant, ~250 pages); 400K with reasoning (~680 pages) | |
| Claude | All plans | Up to 1M tokens on the newest models; 500K or 200K on others | |
| Gemini | No plan / AI Plus | 32K / 128K tokens | |
| Gemini | AI Pro / AI Ultra | 1M tokens | |
| Grok, Perplexity, Copilot, Mistral Vibe | — | Not stated on their plan pages |
What uses up your limit fastest
Google states it directly: media generation, Deep Research and the Pro model consume more of the Gemini allowance than ordinary chat. Anthropic and OpenAI describe the same pattern in their help pages: limits depend on the model, the length of the conversation and attachments.
Length matters because every new message makes the model reread the whole conversation. A chat that has gone back and forth ten times costs far more per message than a fresh one. If you keep correcting an answer, you pay for each correction and for everything before it.
In practice: start a new chat when you change topic, attach only the pages you need, use the strongest model only for hard tasks, and give enough detail in the first prompt that you don’t need three more to fix the result.
IacuWise turns a rough idea into a complete prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT Plus have a message limit?
OpenAI does not publish a fixed number. Its plan page says Plus gets expanded messages and uploads and that “limits apply”. Free and Go text chats are described as unlimited subject to abuse guardrails, with tighter limits for uploads and tools.
How many messages can I send with Claude Pro?
Anthropic does not publish a message count. Pro gives at least 5 times more usage per 5-hour session than Free, plus a weekly limit. Max 5x and Max 20x give 5 and 20 times the Pro allowance.
What is the Gemini free limit?
Google calls it “standard limits”. Google AI Plus doubles it, AI Pro multiplies it by four and AI Ultra gives 5 or 20 times the AI Pro limit. Limits refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly cap. You can see your own usage in Gemini under Settings, Usage Limits.
When does my AI usage limit reset?
Claude and Gemini refill on a rolling 5-hour window and also have a weekly cap. Grok’s pool refreshes weekly, and you can buy top-ups. OpenAI and Perplexity do not publish a reset schedule on their plan pages.
Why do I hit the limit faster when I upload files?
Files add to what the model has to read on every message in that chat, and image, video and research features cost more compute than plain text. Attaching only the pages you need and starting a new chat for a new task both help.
